There is a tree in sub-Saharan Africa, known for its distinct shape, reaching yet angular branches, and its wood that bleeds, as it is known in Zimbabwe where its resonant hard wood is used to craft the traditional Mbira. The Kiaat ensemble is based on the Kalimba, a westernised version of its ancestor, the Mbira.

The compositions and explorations that of the Kiaat ensemble are the product of the time spent in the apprenticeship of the late Smiles Makama, who needs no introduction here.

A series of sketches took form as a process of urgent introspection, healing, and defining a feeling of anxiety, nostalgia, and coming to terms with seen and unseen forces in flux.

With the use of the Kalimba, effect pedals, and an analogue synth driven by the Kalimba. Like honest journal entries, these sketches were all single takes with minimal editing and field recordings woven in that range from insects and birds, discussions, airport drop-offs, pro-democracy protests in the turbulent kingdom, Marseille street choirs, indigenous floors, and finally a recording of a climate and arts activist Dane Mathendele Armstrong giving a presentation on climate change in Mbabane, eSwatini.

Following these sketches are three remixes by Secret Souls, a collective whose obscure producer lives a hermetic existence in the remote and rural Shiselweni region of eSwatini
